Building in Guadalupe

Guadalupe is a town of roughly one square mile with its own government and its own permitting, bordered on all sides by Tempe and Phoenix. It is a distinct community with a long Yaqui and Mexican history, and building here means working in a place where neighbours know each other and a jobsite is visible to everyone.

The housing is dense and modest by valley standards — small lots, single storey, a mix of block and frame with decades of self-built additions layered on. A good deal of the work is establishing what is actually there and what was added without paperwork before anything can be designed on top of it.

The streets are narrow and parking is tight. We keep the working footprint inside the property line, run smaller equipment than we would on an open lot, and keep the site closed up at the end of each day rather than leaving materials out.
